Based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, director William
Friedkin marries three different scenarios into one extraordinary plot. A
visiting actress (Ellen Burstyn) in Washington, D.C., notices dramatic and
dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old
daughter (Linda Blair). She ultimately enlists the aid of a young priest (Jason
Miller) whose fallen on faith, and a frail, elderly priest (Max von Sydow) who
recognizes the necessity for an exorcism to cast out an old demonic enemy to
save the young girl's eternal soul. This Academy Award winning film is
