Staff Picks (November): Midway — From The Pages Of Combat
Oct 28, 2018
War comics are not the kind of comics you normally pick up at your local comic shop on Wednesdays, but in the days before comic shops you had to search for comics, and war and western comics were as abundant and many times were better than the super heroes of the day. Sam Glanzman is one of my personal favorites, one of the first professionals that ever replied to one of my fan letters. I received a surprise package from Sam, the original cover art to Combat and to Kona from his work on those Dell Comic titles. While Dell wasn’t a regular publisher on my list to purchase, this gift sent me to check them out.
Drew Ford had previously collected Sam’s work such as USS Stevens for Dover Publications, and he recently began publishing classic comics featuring the work of Sam Glanzman through his It’s Alive !! publishing.
Midway is a one-shot reprinting the classic Battle of Midway World War II story from Dell’s Combat series as illustrated by Sam Glanzman. This story is illustrated as only an artist who lived through a war could visualize it. At 52 pages for $9.99 you truly get bang for your buck. Check with your retailer about the special variant cover illustrated by legendary Sgt. Rock and Haunted Tank artist Russ Heath.
