Staff Picks (April): Charlies Angels #1

Dynamite has done a great job keeping the spirit of the 1970s alive with retro comics like Classic Battlestar Galactica, Shaft, The Six Million Dollar Man, and The Bionic Woman.  They have identified the key to bringing those groovy disco era titles back by focusing on the fun and uniquely creative elements they embodied while presenting the titles to a modern audience.  I’m particularly harsh on content from my childhood, as we all try to keep those rose-colored glasses in place for things we remember fondly.  But with that said, I can’t wait to see what they do with Charlie’s Angels #1 this month!

Bringing in John Layman to spin the tale and Joe Eisma to design and illustrate the series was inspired.  The art captures the look and energy of the original series not to mention the fashion, cars, and iconic hairstyles of the Angels. I can hear the Charlie’s Angels theme song playing when I see these covers and that is a great way to know they did something right here. Step back in time to a simpler era with one of the true classic television series this month and enjoy an action-packed return to the decade of disco.  Can you dig it?
