Staff Picks (July): Big Trouble In Little China — Old Man Jack #1

Article Image c04e

There’s been a lot of talk about remaking John Carpenter’s mythic cult classic Big Trouble in Little China over the past few years. But in all the discussions and rumors, it’s clear that the role of old dependable Jack Burton won’t be going to Kurt Russell again. I personally think that’s a shame. The success of Ash vs. The Evil Dead shows us just how fun it is to watch our old 80s cult heroes show that age can’t stop them from vanquishing the forces of darkness. But even if we may never see Kurt Russel behind the wheel of the Pork-Shop Express again, BOOM! is ready to take us on one more ride with Jack Burton. With the blessing of John Carpenter, Anthony Burch has set out to write a new entry into the story bolstered by the highly energetic art of Jorge Corona. Old Man Jack sees our now weathered hero facing off against the honest-to-goodness God of the East himself, Ching Dai. And when hell literally breaks loose on Earth, it’s looking pretty grim.

Burch’s signature style of over the top characters and dialogue punctuated by subtle wit pairs with Corona’s expressive line work and monster design mix to make a campy creation that does its source material proud, while also feeling like a deserved update. If you’re a fan of cult 80s action, this will definitely be something to check out!
