Staff Picks (May): Kirby — King Of The Comics Anniversary Edition

This year we celebrate what would have been Jack Kirby’s 100th-birthday but he is the one continuing to give us gifts. Without Jack and his co-creators the comics world would be bleak, missing Captain America, Challengers of the Unknown, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Silver Surfer, The Inhumans, Black Panther, the New Gods, Darkseid, even Fing Fang Foom and Groot.

It was the visual storytelling of Jack Kirby that brought these and many other iconic characters to life on the four-color pages of comic books. Would there have been a Marvel Age of comics, would there be any true Believers, a MMMS, would anyone face front if Jack wasn’t giving visual life to these and many other characters from the 40s to the 80s?

Kirby: King of the Comics Anniversary Edition is a softcover revised and updated edition of the Winner of the 2009 Eisner Award for Best Comics-Related Book. Jack created much of the visual language for fantasy and adventure comics from the moment he entered the industry. Almost everything that was different about comic books began in the 1940s on the drawing table of Jack Kirby. This is his story by one who knew him well, Mark Evanier. The first edition of Kirby: King of Comics was the first overview of the legendary comic book creator’s career. It is now available in a smaller, more affordable package, revised and expanded for Kirby’s centennial.

This is one of the must have books honoring the King of Comics, Jack Kirby. Even if you have the previous hardcover edition you need this edition as well. It’s Never Nuff Said when it comes to the king and his importance in our industry.
