Staff Picks (October): Copra — Round One Volume 1 TP
Sep 17, 2014
Publisher: Bergen Street Comics
Rising creator Michel Fiffe’s Copra is collected by Bergen Street Press, bringing together the first six issues of the super powered, government sanctioned team.
Copra introduces unlikely “heroes” for readers to root for, before slowly picking them apart and setting them against unlikely odds. The comparison to Suicide Squad is likely to be made, yet Fiffe goes beyond archetypes and gives an extra kick to his team of mercenaries.
Beginning with the end of a mission to retrieve an empowered skull, this character driven story follows Copra’s various members as they struggle to piece their lives together after false accusations send their lives in turmoil. The story alone is wonderful, yet it is the art that will leave your jaw on the floor. The detailed art utilizes unique colorization not often featured in comics, allowing the panels to pop out at the reader with a soft and appealing tone. A separate joy of Copra comes from the off-the-wall character designs. Fiffe has no shortage of ideas, skillfully portrayed by the trans-dimensional antagonists.
Truly exemplifying that the medium of comic books comes with an unlimited special effects budget, writer and artist Michel Fiffe masterfully crafts a tale of revenge and intrigue. Copra: Round One is the perfect starting point to find the work of a creator that is gaining the attention that he deserves.
