Staff Picks (Apr14): Chicacabra TP

Publisher: IDW Publishing
I first came across Tom Beland at SPX and was immediately impressed with his mini-comic True Story Swear to G-d and maybe more impressed that he decided to attend, coming as he was from Puerto Rico with no expectations of sales. I was glad to have the opportunity of being his brand manager when he began offering TSSTG under his Clib’s Boy Comic self-publishing imprint. Eventually Tom moved True Story over to Image and I continued to be a fan of his work and reading each issue was like reading his blog before we really knew what blog’s were.
After a while TSSTG ended and that’s Tom’s story to tell. After a bit of an absence Tom has returned with a new book from IDW Publishing, Chicacabra.
Forgoing the serialized route Tom has produced a 200 page black and while graphic novel that seems to taken advantage of his time in Puerto Rico. In Chicacabra, Tom introduces us to Isabel Sanchez who appears to be like any other high school girl – but for the creature living inside her that’s a killing machine.
Tom has a feel to making his characters real and with the introduction of a horror/action theme to this story is exploring new situations and we all get to go along with him and I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
