Chinatown Meets BFG in 'Huge Detective'

This summer, something HUGE is coming. Writer Adam Rose and artist Magenta King present HUGE DETECTIVE, a brand new comic series that follows the unlikely partnership of a human and a giant as they attempt to solve a string of MURDERS sweeping the country. The pair - detectives Tamaki and Gyant - must learn to embrace their SIZABLE differences as they go deeper into a mystery BIGGER than either could imagine.
We chatted with creators Rose and King about their upcoming series, which starts August 2024.
Firstly, could you give readers an elevator pitch for Huge Detective and tell us why people should get in their pre-orders in as soon as they finish reading this interview?
Adam Rose: Murder and identity come together in Huge Detective to pull a comic reader into a world with ancient roots. If you like True Detective sprinkled with Roald Dahl and a dash of geo-political discord, we have the BIGGEST, BEST book for you right here!
Magenta King: I think we managed to build a very different vision of crime stories and also giant protagonists. We are filling the pages with a lot of detail and layers that will make the reader want to know more and more about the story throughout the editions.
How did the concept for Huge Detective come together?
AR: Around four years ago, Giants in the modern world popped into my head, and the mystery of Huge Detective was born. My first thought involved my passion for the art form of comics and how it is such a beautiful and unique space where anything is possible. I wanted to create something that used sequential art to its fullest, pushing boundaries and panel configurations into visual storytelling that explodes onto the page.
MK: When Adam invited me to this project, I was very curious about how giants and crime stories would work together. When I started reading and getting involved in the story, I began to see a very different path than what I had read before. And that made me want to add as much as possible to the story with my art.
This series is about Detective Tamaki, a human, and Detective Gyant, a giant, solving a series of murders and disappearances across the US. Given their sizable differences, what is their relationship like at the start of the comic?
AR: The idea of characters from different worlds having to meet somewhere in the middle has always grabbed my attention. Tamaki and Gyant live with a lot of trauma from the days of the Omega Event and the current state of affairs between Huge and Human. Tamaki doesn’t trust Gyant not to gobble her up on the spot and Gyant doesn’t trust himself. Like any relationship, they have to learn how to build trust and they have to dismantle the stereotypes they associate with one another. Huge Detective shows the ups and downs of how these two navigate one another and this oversized case!
MK: What worried me most at the beginning was this difference in the characters’ sizes. And for practical reasons: how could I put both on the scene without always using the same solutions? In the end, this question was what motivated me the most to create new frameworks, new solutions and focus a lot on narrative and expression.
Every original comic series is made differently with its own unique style of artistic collaboration. How have you both worked together to create Huge Detective?
AR: As soon as I read Jenny Zero and learned about Magenta’s work, I knew I had to get a hold of him for this book! I could not have asked for a better partner and collaborator. Magenta and I have had countless Zoom meetings going back and forth on the expansiveness of this world and how to make it bigger and better.
MK: I couldn’t have been invited by a better partner for this project. I really feel super happy when I can work together with such talented and interesting creators like Adam. It’s amazing to be able to help build this story, and to see how each part we do opens up bigger and more exciting possibilities.
