Throwback Thursday: Big Barda: For Battle and Love

image

Apokolips is a frightening world populated by dangerous beings like Darkseid, but not all of its residents walk the villain’s path. Big Barda’s story began on Apokolips and since then, she has used her experience and relationships to become a heroine. She was created by Jack Kirby and introduced in Mister Miracle #4 (October 1971) as one of the New Gods. Barda was taken from her mother Big Breeda when she was just a child to be trained at the Home for Orphaned Youth run by Granny Goodness. She has superstrength, isn’t easily harmed, she’s a tough fighter, and can use many types of weapons.Granny Goodness planned to turn her into the leader of the Female Fury Battalion, but things went wrong when she met Scott Free, Darkseid’s adopted son and future Mister Miracle. Despite their different personalities and opposing outlooks, Barda and Scott fell in love.

After New God Himon’s people were murdered by Wonderful Williki, Barda and her Furies joined the fight. In the melee, they helped Scott escape Darkseid and flee, though Barda stayed behind on Apokolips. She finally left Granny Goodness behind and headed for Earth where she found that Scott had taken the secret identity of escape artist Thaddeus Brown. Barda joined the magic act and eventually the pair got married, taking the act on the road. Despite trying to retire from the superhero life, Big Barda went on to aid the Justice League and Birds of Prey.
