Early buzz on the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot has been overwhelmingly positive. You might even say thunderously enthusiastic. If you consider yourself one of many falling all over themselves because of the recent trailer (above), then wait until you hear about what the directors have to say...
During a roundtable discussion earlier this week, PREVIEWSworld's Ani-Mia sat down with Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid and producer Todd Garner. Ace reporter that she is -- Ani-Mia got McQuoid and Garner to open up about stories from the set, meeting fan expectations, and the struggle to get the franchise just right. She also got a ridiculously cool gift box of MK swag (pictured below) and a chance to watch 13 minutes of the film (more on that below, too).
"The first thirteen minutes were heartbreaking, brutal, action-packed and everything I was looking for in a Mortal Kombat movie," told PREVIEWSworld after the interview. "Everything done and shown in the film is there with a purpose. The over the top gore isn't there just for shock value but is true to the series and even looks like it does in the game. In the first thirteen minutes, you see that they are going to be true to each character down to their cultural and lingual differences."
But Mia also asked the tough questions -- getting past the gory, superficial (but fun) aspects of Mortal Kombat and asking about the inherently cultural underpinnings of the franchise. "Hearing Simon speak on how important it was to emphasize and show their cultural backgrounds and how much work went into ensuring the casting was perfect," Mia notes. " It makes me confident that this movie was put into the right hands. When Todd talks about being a fan himself and how much discussion was put into ensuring that they could keep fans happy as much as possible, that sense was only multiplied. Hearing the passion both of them poured into this film, has only made me more excited for its debut."

Mortal Kombat arrives on HBO MAX and in theaters on April 16, 2021.
