Russo Bros. announce that they would adapt two pop culture favorites: the independent comic Grimjack and the enduring anime Battle of the Planets. John Ostrander & Tim Truman’s Grimjack follows a mercenary swordsman’s adventures running a city where magic and technology co-existed. Battle of the Planets — which chronicles the unending war between G-Force and the evil forces of Spectra & Zoltar — has been a crowd-pleaser since it first came to America from Japan in the 1970s and 1980s. The brothers will develop the projects through their company, AGBO, and while they said they would not direct Grimjack, they did not dismiss the possibility of directing a live-action Battle of the Planets. (Anthony Russo said, “I would race home from school just to watch this at 4 p.m.”) Additionally, the brothers provided a tantalizing update on their upcoming Magic: The Gathering animated series for Netflix. “It’s an animated project with the potential to spin it off into live-action,” said Joe Russo. “It’s a game we love — we’re geeks and love Magic: The Gathering and we’re excited to tell stories with it.”
