Most readers know that manga can get pretty sexy. But while most romantic fiction in the West is aimed at women, in Japan, manga has a mountain of romantic stories made especially for men.
One especially popular type of manga for boys is the “harem” genre. A harem manga features a male lead surrounded by a group of beautiful women, most of whom are vying for his affections.
There’s also a version of this for girls: a female lead surrounded by handsome boys is called a “reverse harem.” And there are LGBT+ harems, too!
The manga/anime Tenchi Muyo! from the 1990s is often credited as one of the first series to embody the harem genre as it is today.
Seven Seas Entertainment launched their Ghost Ship imprint (publishing sexy manga for older readers) in late 2017, and it currently publishes five harem manga, including To Love Ru, To Love Ru Darkness, and Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs.
Whether in manga, anime, or light novels — which have become especially popular in recent years — harem love stories are abundant, so pick one and enjoy! Or pick more than one... since the whole point of a harem manga is plenty of choice!
