When Princess Zara trips over the Decimator defector Wheeler, she sets in motion events that pit princesses against giant robots! Read what writer Todd Nathy says about his new series in this PREVIEWSworld interview.

Robots Vs. Princesses #1 (JUN181022) is in comic shops August 1.

**********

D.E.: Robots vs. Princesses is one of those titles that seems to tell you a lot in just three words. How did you come up with the idea for this series?

Todd Nathy: I came up with the series while I was substituting in a first trade classroom. The teacher had coloring pages for when the kids finished their work: robots for boys and princesses for girls. It immediately hit me. From there the wheels started turning. Who are the robots? Who are the princesses? Why are they fighting? What's separating them? I went home and started scribbling notes and next thing I knew, I had a story.

D.E.: The first one we meet is Princess Zara who appears to be in a school for princesses? What is the world of Harmonia like?

Todd Nathy: Zara is the youngest Princess at thirteen years old from the Kingdom of Tanglewylde and is a firecracker. Her lack of interest in traditions immediately brought her into conflict with High Queen Aleta and her daughter Penelope.

Harmonia is made up of five kingdoms. The Royal Family from one of the kingdoms serves a five- year term as High King and High Queen before the next family takes over. During this period the High Queen serves as headmistress/teacher of the Royal Academy for Princesses, where the Princesses from each kingdom learn how to be good Queens.

D.E.: Then we get to meet Wheeler who seems to be in a very different world with constant battles raging. What is he like prior to the story?

Todd Nathy: Because of his small size Wheeler is a whipping bot for the Decimator Warlord Tyrannis and hates his life. He doesn't know why he puts up with it, just assumed it was the role he was assigned when he came off the Assembly Line (where the robots are born). Wheeler's had enough of the abuse and leaves the Decimators.

D.E.: Now that we know the two leads, what can you tell us about what happens? Coming from different worlds will be an obvious obstacle for them, but what other types of problems might they come across? ls there an actual bad guy and if so, does his name begin with a "T"?

Todd Nathy: Without giving too much away, Zara and Wheeler put aside their differences fairly quickly. At first the only obstacle Zara and Wheeler face is hiding him from the Queen, but once Tyrannis arrives, their worlds get "decimated!" Tyrannis is the big bad guy and he makes his presence known. The Princesses are Harmonia's and Wheeler's last hope.

D.E.: What can you tell us about Nicolas Chapuis, the artist on the series? What made him the right choice to draw the book? And what is your working relationship like? Does he get involved in the overall story?

Todd Nathy: Nic is a treasure. He took two genres that have different art styles and brought them together in a way that it doesn't look like they're intruding on each other. Nic's art is the reason I call this book, "the greatest animated movie never made."

D.E.: Though the title is a pretty straightforward hook, how would you describe this book in a sentence or two to entice a reader to give it a shot?

Todd Nathy: All-ages fun that does not talk down to children. The book that bridges the gap between brother and sister while at the same time delighting parents.
