Indie Edge Creator of the Month: Kat Leyh

Kat Leyh is a Chicago-based writer and artist. She’s best known as co-writer and cover artist for the series Lumberjanes, and for her queer superhero webcomic, Supercakes.

Please tell us a bit about yourself!

I have been writing and drawing comics now for about four years, and I still feel incredibly lucky that this is my job! When I’m not doing that, I love riding my bike, cooking, playing the fiddle, and traveling. I will likely make comics about doing all of those things at some point!

What are your favorite projects you’ve contributed to over the past decade?

I’ve been fortunate to work on a lot of projects for different series that I’m already a fan of, like Steven Universe and Bravest Warriors. Also, being part of the Lumberjanes team has let me work with a lot of incredible artists, which is still something that delights me!

What are you currently working on?

Other than Lumberjanes, I’m working on a graphic novel right now for First Second called Roadkill Witch, it should be out in 2019.

What fun titles are you reading?

Most of my favorite comics have very kinetic, flowing art styles like Last Man, This One Summer (MAR141197), One Punch Man (Vol. 1 / JUN158141), and One Piece (3-in-1 Vol. 1 / OCT091135). I love shorts and mini-series as well. Emily Carroll is one of my absolute favorite storytellers and I love her collection of short horror comics, Through the Woods (JAN178756). I read fewer non-fiction comics, but Lucy Knisley's autobiographical comics are my favorite in that category, her travel comic Age of License (JUN141213), specifically.
