YouNeek Brings African Culture To Halloween Comicfest

New eye candy makes the world go ‘round. It’s why we love to see trailers so much, both in theaters and online. The same holds true for the holidays. Each year, commercials will point out the hot toys you should ask for on your wish list. On Halloween, the question is what’s the hot costume to wear when it’s time to trick or treat. And speaking of Halloween, now that Halloween ComicFest is a part of the annual festivities, many people wonder what Halloween book will raise the bar at the comic shop.

You’d be surprised to know that YouNeek Studios’ Malika: Dragon Trials (JUL170037) is in the running for that top spot. The reason? It's eye candy unlike what you’ve seen before. In an on-camera interview we did with Co-Founder/CEO of YouNeek Studios, Roye Okupe, we got a peek at the book and better understood why people are starting to talk about it.

“It’s a one-shot specifically for Halloween Comicfest, and we have some great stuff in there,” Okupe offers. “Dragons and African mythology.”

African mythology, you say? In a book that’s geared towards Halloween?

“Yes,” Okupe points out. “That’s not something you get to see all the time in comic books.”

Clearly one of the top understatements of the year. When you say “Halloween,” people tend to conjure images of ghosts, ghouls, and goblins. Dragons? That’s a game changer. So is a story that’s rooted in the culture of Nigeria.

“I basically took a lot of things I was exposed to growing up. You know, my culture, things I experienced, the stories that they told us. So I create books that are true to my culture, but I do it in a way that doesn’t alienate people.”
