Charlie Brown and the Gang are Ready for a Momentous Autumn

For fans of Charles Schulz's comic strip Peanuts, this autumn brings two momentous events. October 2nd marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of the publication of the first strip, then on November 6th, The Peanuts Movie, the first CGI animated Peanuts film and the first Peanuts film in over thirty years, arrives in theaters.

BOOM! Studios has established themselves as creators of new Peanuts material in the style of Schulz with their Peanuts comic book and original graphic novels. The Peanuts comic book typically contains two or three short stories of four to six pages along with comic strip repritns, activities, and "how to draw" features. In recent months, the comic book has expanded into full-length stories such as "It's Summer Camp, Charlie Brown" in Peanuts #25 (DEC141218, $3.99), and BOOM! collects the new material in trade paperback collections (Volume 2: DEC120953, $13.99).

In addition to the collections, BOOM! also publishes original graphic novels with the Peanuts gang. The first, Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown (JUL110962, $9.99) adapted the 2011 animated special. This was followed by It's Tokyo, Charlie Brown (DEC148387, $9.99), an original tale in which Charlie Brown and his baseball team travel to Japan to compete in an international baseball tournament. In The Beagle Has Landed, Charlie Brown (APR141016, $9.99), Snoopy's imaginary life as an astronaut and his real-life fear of The Cat Next Door combine for a charming tale about overcoming fears. This fall sees the release of the next original graphic novel, Where Beagles Dare! (JUL151096, $9.99), a new tale of Snoopy as the World War I Flying Ace.

BOOM! Studios' major Peanuts release this fall is Peanuts: A Tribute to Charles M. Schulz (JUL151095, $34.95). In this volume, an all-star line-up of artists pay tribute to Schulz and Peanuts in their own style. Artists include Mike Allred (Silver Surfer), Art Baltazar (Tiny Titans), Jimmy Gownley (Amelia Rules!), Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Roger Langridge (Doctor Who), Jeff Lemire, Patrick McDonnell (Mutts), Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise), Dustin Nguyen (Batman: Li'l Gotham), Lincoln Peirce (Big Nate), Paul Pope, Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo), Raina Telgemeier (Sisters), and many more. A visual treat, Peanuts: A Tribute to Charles M. Schulz reveals the influence Schulz and Peanuts had on their careers and imaginations of a generation of artists.

Fantagraphics' biannual series The Complete Peanuts, an archival hardcover series that reprints every Charles Schulz Peanuts strip in chronological order, is nearing its completion; the twenty-third volume, coming 1995 and 1996 (FEB151419, $29.99), was published in June, and two more volumes in the next year will complete the series. Fantagraphics also publishes Peanuts Every Sunday, a full-color reprinting of every Peanuts Sunday strip in order, beginning with Peanuts Every Sunday: 1952-1956 (AUG131305, $49.99). For the dedicated Peanuts fan, these books in both series collect Schulz's original strip in the highest-possible quality.

Fantagraphics has also published five themed gift books, perfect for stocking stuffers or special occasions. Batter Up, Charlie Brown! (JAN151451, $9.99) collects three storylines about Charlie Brown's exploits on the baseball diamond, while Waiting for the Great Pumpkin (JUL141214E, $9.99), A Valentine for Charlie Brown (NOV141446, $9.99), and Snoopy's Thanksgiving (AUG141472, $9.99) collect holiday-themed strips. Charlie Brown's Christmas Stocking (SEP121089, $9.99) reprints rare Peanuts stories that were published in Good Housekeeping and Woman's Day in the 1960s. These books are certain to be treasured by any Peanuts fan.

Also reprinting classic Peanuts comic strips, Titan Comics is reissuing the classic Peanuts comic strip paperback collections of the 1950s and 1960s originally published by Rinehart, beginning with Peanuts (MAR151542, $6.99), More Peanuts (MAR151543F, $6.99), and Good Grief, More Peanuts (MAR151721, $6.99), covering strips published between 1950 and 1954. Plus, AMP for Kids, an imprint of Andrews-McMeel, is publishing themed Peanuts collections that feature colorized strips from the last decade of Peanuts. Among their titles: Snoopy: Cowabunga! (MAY140986, $9.99), a book centered on Charlie Brown's baseball team; and Charlie Brown & Friends (DEC130821, $9.99), a general collection. Collectors of figurines and toys are not left out of the Peanuts celebration this year.

Enesco has launched a Peanuts by Jim Shore line of stone resin figurines. Similar to his Disney Traditions line, the Peanuts by Jim Shore figurines recreate the familiar Peanuts characters with Shore's distinctive quilted Americana look. Collectors can look forward to the Peanuts by Jim Shore: Lucy Fussbudget Figurine (APR152690, $26.00), the Peanuts by Jim Shore: Peppermint Patty Figurine (APR152694, $26.00), and many other character-specific figurines. Funko's POP! Vinyl Figures have been blockbusters at the sales counter; collectors have gravitated to their stylized design and small size, and fans have seen many of their favorite pop-culture franchises join the line in the past few years. Schulz's Peanuts characters are the latest franchise to join the line, and later this summer fans will be able to add POP!
