Writers of Bad Kids go to Hell, Matthew Spradlin and Berry Wernick took some time to chat about the series and what fans can look forward to with the future of the franchise.
Diamond Daily: So, Matthew and Bazz, what have you guys been up to since the last graphic novel printing?
We recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to get the Bad Kids Go 2 Hell graphic novel sequel printed. Besides working on the comic book and now movie sequels to Bad Kids Go to Hell, we have also teamed up with legendary producer, Gil Adler (Tales From the Crypt, Superman, Valkyrie, Constantine), in developing a TV Series based on the Bad Kids Go to Hell comic book series franchise. James Hallam has joined our team in developing family friendly properties as well as other more gritty, hard and edgy properties for our company Good Kids/Bad Kids. And Matthew just recently made a short film called 'The Social Contract' which was accepted to the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. He's also been working on doing another 3-issue mini-series for 'The Adventures of a Comic-Con Girl' with co-creator, Dana Braziel-Solovy. I guess you could say we've been keeping really busy.
Diamond Daily: Tell me about Bad Kids Press?
It is the publisher for Good Kids/ Bad Kids.
Diamond Daily: What is Good Kids/Bad Kids?
It is the parent company, which we plan to launch other comic, book based properties and television and film projects. Some are more family friendly than others. Hence, the "Good" Kids.
Diamond Daily: Tell me about Bad Kids Go 2 Hell?
Bad Kids Go 2 Hell takes place 4 years after the original series. Back at good 'ol Crestview Academy. A new crop of the school's finest find themselves in deep sh*t during a Saturday morning detention.
Diamond Daily: What inspired you guys to write this comic franchise?
Around 2006, we thought about what it would be like if Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton were forced to serve detention together. That sent a shiver through our spines. We very quickly outlined a script and in six months had a presentable draft we were shopping to the studios. But then the Writer's strike of 2007 hit. A friend of ours, David Atchison, suggested we turn it into a comic book. We did and three years later we were moving into pre-production on the film.
Diamond Daily: What are your individual roles while writing?
a. Story Boarding
We work together on character, story, and plot first. And then pass rough drafts of a movie screenplay back and forth with the idea that it will be a comic book series. What we have found out from our fans is that when they read our comic books, it feels like they are actually "reading" a movie. It's pretty cool to see that we have also turned a lot of moviegoers who would normally not read comics into comic book fans.
b. Comic Book Panels
Matthew handles initial page layouts with the artist(s) and figure out how best to translate the script to the panels. What moments need emphasizing, what the characters look like, interior locations, etc. Much like creating storyboards.
c. Editing
Matthew does an initial 'edit' with the artist on panels and story and then we both do a final edit, to make sure all the elements are cohesive and that the continuity works.
d. Design
Once the artist has finished all the pages, Matthew again does an initial 'edit' with the artist on panels and story and then we turn it over to the colorist. Once he is finished, we do a final edit, to make sure all the elements are cohesive and that the continuity works. Then we ship to the printer.
Diamond Daily: How long does this process take?
A good nine months from beginning to end. There are always some road bumps along the way. Usually about 3 months worth!
Diamond Daily: What can we expect out of this story?
Expect to see more of Crestview Academy, because this time the kids spend more time trapped within the school itself and not just the library. There are some really sinister things happening at Crestview and we dig deeper into why bad things happen to the bad kids.
Diamond Daily: What is in the future for you guys over the next two years? What will Good and Bad Kids will bring you…
Different stories outside the Bad Kids world. We plan to break out of Crestview Academy ourselves and do some more comics for young kids and big kids alike.
