Out of the gate at this year's San Diego Comic Con, IDW Publishing announced the latest expansion to the company's revered art book series: Wally Wood's EC Stories: Artist's Edition.
The third in the Artist's Edition series, the book will be an oversized hardcover presenting Wood's art the same size as it was originally drawn. The book, measuring 15x22, has art scanned from original pages to ensure the highest possible quality reproduction. Each page was scanned in color to mimic the actual original art, including white-out corrections and blue pencil notations.
"I love EC Comics," said Artist's Editions Editor Scott Dunbier, "and Wally Wood is one of my all-time favorite artists—when he's at his best, no one can touch him."
"It's wonderful to see such an amazing tribute to Wally Wood. IDW has done a top notch job," said Cathy Gaines-Mifsud. "My Dad would be thrilled, as would Wally."
Wally Wood's EC Stories: Artist's Edition follows IDW's previous Artist's Edition series, Dave Steven's The Rocketeer and Walter Simonson's The Mighty Thor. The Wood Edition will be released in October. Two more volumes are said to be announced throughout San Diego Comic-Con.
In other IDW news, the original Starship Enterprise will be entering the DC Universe for the first time this summer. IDW Publishing has announced its first-ever crossover with DC Comics’ Super Heroes in Star Trek/Legion Of Superheroes, a six-issue monthly series beginning in October 2011.
IDW Publishing also announced the company’s partnership with King Features to bring Popeye back to comic books, with all-new adventures with this famous character and his friends, including Olive Oyl, Bluto, Wimpy and Swee’Pea.
Several comics series in the universe of James O’Barr’s classic The Crow comics are coming soon, based on the upcoming feature film. Additionally, IDW will offer collector’s editions of all existing The Crow comics.
Lastly, IDW announced an all-new horror series with acclaimed creators Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson: Frankenstein: Alive will launch in 2012, picking up right where Mary Shelley’s classic tale ends.
