In 1978, Warner Bros. told moviegoers that they would believe a man could fly after seeing Superman – The Movie. Now, as CW prepares to unveil the tenth – and final – season of Smallville, viewers are beginning to believe that young Clark Kent’s journey from Last Son of Krypton to Man of Steel is about to take flight for real.

smv rpgWhen Smallville’s creators began promoting the series a decade ago, their mantra was “No flights, no tights,” implicitly stating that the Superman of the comics, cartoons, movies and previous TV incarnations would not be making an appearance in the traditional red-blue-and-gold costume.

But when the original producers left the show a few seasons back, the new showrunners began incorporating more and more of the comic book mythos, even going so far as to introduce costumed characters like the 31st century Legion of Super-Heroes and the Golden Age Justice Society (in episodes penned by comics writer Geoff Johns) and Superman’s mortal enemy, Doomsday.

Now, based on trailers airing on CW and the Internet – as well as “teaser” images from last season’s Justice Society two-parter – it appears that star Tom Welling may indeed don the super-suit this season, which may see the reappearance of Michael Rosenbaum as a resurrected-from-the-dead Lex Luthor and John Schneider as Jonathan Kent, possibly as a ghost.

According to a write-up on the CW’s official Smallville website, the tenth season begins with a bang. Here’s the description of the episode, entitled “Lazarus”:

The season premiere picks up where the finale left off. Lois (Erica Durance) finds Clark's (Tom Welling) lifeless body and removes the blue kryptonite enabling him to heal himself. However, Lois sneaks away before Clark fully awakens in order to protect his secret. Meanwhile, Chloe (Allison Mack) is desperate to find Oliver (Justin Hartley), so she turns to an unlikely source for answers. Jonathan (Schneider) returns to the Kent Farm with a message for Clark, and Tess (Cassidy Freeman) awakens in a LuthorCorp lab. Kevin Fair directed the episode written by Don Whitehead & Holly Henderson.
