When I was just a kid in the 80’s and 90’s one of my best friends and I had a deal. I would only buy Nintendo consoles and he would only get Sega consoles. Together we played some of the best videogames of the 8-bit and 16-bit generations, but I always felt that I had the better end of this arrangement because I was introduced to the Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System. I was blown away by the vast open world and the epic grandeur of my quest to rid Hyrule of Ganon’s evil. Also, it didn’t hurt that the game cartridge was a really sweet glossy gold and not the standard NES gray.

When Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past debuted on the Super Nintendo I went right back to save Hyrule… but I was just a kid and this game was hard for me at the time. Like any Nintendo gamer, when I got stumped on a game I went to get the power—Nintendo POWER! In Nintendo’s magazine I got some hints, but I didn’t actually beat the game as a kid. However, I did get a treat I didn’t expect. There were Legend of Zelda comics in Nintendo Power about the game!

Written and drawn by Shotaro Ishinomori (Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider) the comics provide a faithful adaptation of the game that feels just as epic as the game. Reading through the comics now reminds me of the feeling I had when I first guided Link into the Lost Woods to find the Master Sword and my endless quest to find those elusive heart pieces scattered about the world. Reprinted as a 196 page graphic novel from Perfect Square this is a chance for every Nintendo fan to recapture a bit of their childhood and an opportunity for new fans to grab a piece of videogame history.

Be sure to pick up your copy this May from Perfect Square!
