Staff Picks (July14): Serenity — Leaves on the Wind

I jumped onto the Firefly bandwagon late after discovering the series on Netflix but it only took a few episodes to convert me into a fan. I was shocked to see that such a good show with memorable characters and such a vibrant fan base has only received just one season and a movie. After scouring the internet for any news of a second season, movie sequel, or a spinoff and coming up with nothing I started to lose hope and my attention eventually switched over to other shows like the new Battlestar Galactica.

Then the November PREVIEWS happened and Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1 was solicited! After a lot of waiting and disappointment I would finally be able to see what happened to my favorite characters of the show. The new series, set just a few months after the events of the movie Serenity, has the galaxy tumbling back to a new civil war after it is discovered that the Alliance is responsible for creating a vicious group of cannibals called the Reavers and then leaving them alone so that they can sate their hunger for human flesh on any poor ship that falls into their clutches.

If you missed out on the individual issues and you are a fan of the show you owe it to yourself not to miss out on the collected trade paperback! Written by Zack Whedon and with gorgeous art by Georges Jeanty (Buffy) this series treats the source material with respect and brings our favorite characters back for a much appreciated new adventure.
