Staff Picks (May): Warship Jolly Roger
Apr 20, 2016
In a distant future where mankind has colonized planets throughout the galaxy, former Confederation Commander Jon T. Munro serves a life sentence for a war crime he was forced to commit against his will. Not exactly falsely accused, but still a scapegoat for a corrupt government, Munro takes advantage of a prison riot and escapes with a ragtag team of smugglers, killers, and rebels. Knowing they have no chance on their own, and no chance if they run, the band opts to go on the offensive by hijacking the warship Munro once commanded and taking the fight to those who imprisoned them.
Sylvain Runberg’s futuristic space opera moves at a breakneck pace, the characters are rich and complex, and the art by Miquel Montllo gives this universe a texture and vitality that is almost unmatched. Warship Jolly Roger blends the sci-fi grit of Battlestar Galactica and the charming criminal ensemble elements of Firefly with Steve McQueen’s prison break classic The Great Escape. The result is an adventure with a lot of heart.
Space pirates. Tyrannical regimes. Starship battles. Political intrigue. Fugitives from the law. The newest offering from Magnetic Press has it all.
