Staff Picks (April): Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Land That Time Forgot #1
Mar 23, 2016
In 1916, Bowen Tyler, some British pals, and the crew of a German U-Boat washed onto the shores of Caspak, a prehistoric island hidden from the rest of the world. The only record of Tyler’s adventures with the indigenous people of the island was a manuscript stuffed into a Thermos and tossed out to sea. Today, after 100 years, Tyler’s great granddaughter Abby has launched an expedition to uncover the island and verify the claims of her ancestor.
In American Mythology’s newest offering, comic veteran Mike Wolfer picks up where Edgar Rice Burroughs left off. In a flashback, we witness the hand of Captain Tyler offering his Thermos and his story to the ocean waves, letting us know everything that follows is the result of that final moment of Bowen’s journey. All of the iconic pieces are still in place -- dinosaurs, U-Boats, cave people -- but this is a new vision for The Land That Time Forgot as it seeks to answer modern day questions that were not even considered when the original story was penned. How does an island stay hidden in the age of satellites and Google Earth? Is time on Caspak different than time on the rest of the planet? With so much done for us by technology, can an expedition of 21st-century explorers survive with the same skill and courage as their predecessors or has modern life made them too weak?
