Staff Picks (October 12): The Last Call Vol. 2 GN

Like a Guillermo del Toro movie on paper, The Last Call is a surreal, horror/fantasy adventure featuring the same attention to design and atmosphere that horror audiences look for in memorable fantasy/horror movies.

Alec and Sam are two average teenagers who have found themselves on a supernatural train travelling non-stop through space and time to the far reaches of strange dimensions and beyond. The boys haven’t found a way to get off the train yet but they have even more important things to worry about as they avoid being the next victim of a mysterious passenger who is systematically killing everyone on board.

This series builds suspense with creative use of pacing and layout in order to heighten the surreal and disorienting quality of the story. Not every horror comic delivers a true sense of dread but, like a truly scary movie, The Last Call manages to take full advantage of the medium in order to put readers on edge up till the last page.
