Article Image cd21
Poppy is a mysterious and enigmatic Internet sensation… starring in Youtube videos and music videos that spawn intense fan interaction, analysis, and commentary. Is she a girl? Is she a machine? Is she humanity’s redemption, or its damnation? Those questions are not easy to answer, and they won’t be found here.

What you will find here are answers to questions that are more accessible… as Poppy enthusiastically enters the comics field with her new Graphic Novel, GENESIS ONE (MAY192049) from Z2 Comics!

**********

PREVIEWSworld: What drew you to comics? Is writing a graphic novel something that’s been on your to-do list?

Poppy: From the beginning, we knew comics would be a great medium for storytelling in Poppy’s universe. The initial draw came from imagining what the imagery and design could look like, but as we got into the story itself we found a certain freedom that wasn’t restricted by production hurdles of a movie or music video. This opened up a whole new creative world because this allowed us to tell the origin story of Poppy without limitations.

PREVIEWSworld: What has been your favorite part of the process of creating a brand-new story?

Poppy: The best part about this process is collaborating with artists we respect so much and having a shared vision come to life before our eyes. Every creative idea tends to have a particular method of delivery that makes the most sense — sometimes a song is the right way to go forward, sometimes it’s a short film — but in this case a graphic novel was the perfect format and the process of creating it has been awesome.

PREVIEWSworld: Are comics a longtime passion? If so, what are some favorites?

Poppy: Comics have been a huge inspiration to the creative world of Poppy and spending so much time in Japan has really reinforced that. Akira is a staple, as well as Hellboy. The Dark Knight Returns was pivotal as well. It would be an injustice not to list Sin City as well; the imagery is unbelievable and holds up just as strong today!

PREVIEWSworld: How has the creative process been, writing this book and recording the new album? Has one influenced the other?

Poppy: They all influence each other to the extent that it all feels like one cohesive body of work. When we set out to make something new, there is no distinction between which medium will be the focus. Just like an architect uses dozens of tools to construct a building, our tools just happen to be software-based and range across all creative mediums. Sometimes a series of chords on a piano will influence a scene change in the story and often seeing a panel will inspire a tone on a synthesizer. It’s a very balanced process.

PREVIEWSworld: Should we expect some of your new songs to tie into Genesis One?

Poppy: Yes! From the beginning, Poppy has been planting the seeds of the Genesis One plot and fans can expect to find some really fun Easter Eggs that will lead them even further down the rabbit hole!

PREVIEWSworld: Did you have a favorite comic book growing up?

Poppy: It’s impossible to single just one out — that’s like trying to pick a favorite album. It’s probably safe to say Spawn and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were up there along with the others mentioned previously. Sin City is just so cool as well!

PREVIEWSworld: Have there been challenges in translating the feel of your music and your videos to sequential art?

Poppy: Not at all. We kind of reverse-engineered the process so when it came time to tell this story, the foundation and themes were already so reinforced that it has made the process very fluid and natural. It was a huge help going into this process with over 500 videos that served as a great blueprint.

PREVIEWSworld: Is there anything in Genesis One that you would like to recreate in one of your videos?

Poppy: We’ve already incorporated some of the scenes, but fans can absolutely expect to see the story to jump off the page and into videos in the future. This is one of the things we are most excited about!

PREVIEWSworld: If you could pick one superhero to feature in one of your videos, which one would it be?

Poppy: Without a doubt Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

PREVIEWSworld: Is writing graphic novels something you would like to do more of in the future?

Poppy: This has been an absolute dream come true and we hope to continue this as a series!
