The Walking Dead’s Scott Wilson Dies at 76

Actor Scott Wilson, whose many credits included portraying Hershel Greene on AMC’s The Walking Dead, has died at the age of 76, reportedly from leukemia.

Multiple outlets reported his death when it broke on The Walking Dead official Twitter account on October 7. Shortly before, it was announced at New York Comic Con that Wilson would return for the series’ ninth season. His scenes have already been filmed.

Born in Atlanta in 1942, Wilson hitchhiked to Los Angeles and began to create an impressive resume in 1967 as both murder suspect Harvey Oberst in In the Heat of the Night, then as condemned killer Richard Hickock in In Cold Blood. He also played memorable supporting roles in The Great Gatsby (1974 version), The Heartbreak Kid, The Right Stuff, Pearl Harbor, Judge Dredd and many more films. He also played the recurring role of Sam Braun on CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

AMC released the following statement: "Scott will always be remembered as a great actor and we all feel fortunate to have known him as an even better person. The character he embodied on The Walking Dead, Hershel, lived at the emotional core of the show. Like Scott in our lives, Hershel was a character whose actions continue to inform our character’s choices to this day. Our hearts go out to his wife, his family, friends and to the millions of fans who loved him. Scott will be missed."

Skybound Entertainment added, “We are deeply saddened to report that Scott Wilson, the incredible actor who played Hershel on #TheWalkingDead, has passed away at the age of 76. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in paradise, Scott. We love you!”
