In celebration of Black History Month, PREVIEWSworld asked multiple creators within the comics industry to talk about their personal history with Black History Month and their personal history with comics. In our sixth installment in this series, we talk with Inkwell Award winner Dexter Vines!

Give us the rundown on a recent comics project you're excited to be a part of.

Recent projects include a couple of issues of JLA and the 12 issue mini-series Michael Cray for DC Comics.

When did you become interested in comics?

I became interested in comics seriously in high school after being reintroduced to them by my best friend, and like most young artist we started to create our own comics and we also worked on a comic strip for the school newspaper. Once I read an interview with Denys Cowan, [after that]  I knew a little black kid from Atlanta could do this also. For the last 22-plus years, I have.

How was Black History Month introduced to you growing up? Does that line up with your take on Black History Month in 2018?

Like most kids in my generation, it was strictly a month thing. Unfortunately, I barely recognized it seriously. I didn’t really appreciate what Black History Month was until my teenage years. I'm glad the month seems like it has more relevance these days along with the black culture in general.

If you could work on any comic next, what would it be?

At this point I have worked on most books I wanted too, I’m more about working with a different artist whose work I love. I have a list I make. Each year I try to cross a name off the list.

What comics are you reading right now?

The main comics I read these days with any regularity are Walking Dead.

Where will you be appearing this year?

I’m still getting my con schedule together, but the shows I know I will be at are Heros Con, Dragon Con, and New York Comic Con.
