Forged In Fire As A Sword of Ages

by Vince Brusio

At this year's San Diego Comic Con, we were able to grab Gabriel Rodriguez at the IDW booth for a word about his upcoming fantasy adventure book, Sword of Ages #1 (SEP170459). Of course, Locke & Key was on everyone's lips as news had broken that the book was going to be turned into a TV series, with IDW putting their muscle behind the project. Briefly, Rodriguez commented on the news, and expressed excitement over how IDW was moving mountains to keep everything on track for the series. But it was Rodriguez's upcoming solo project that had us jazzed the most, as a preview for the book was circulating on the floor of the Con, and everyone who look was looking at it could see overtones of Moebius, and Savage Sword of Conan.

Upon hearing those references, Rodriguez was happy to elaborate.

"Basically, this comes out of all those things you just mentioned," he said. "That's all the stuff I read when I was a teenager. Lot of Heavy Metal magazines. All that kind of fantasy stuff was a big influence in my childhood. And this is mixed with my love for progressive rock."

It was the combination of his art and rock music that elevated the discussion to a new level. A marriage of art and music? That's when you put the chocolate in the peanut butter, and the candy comes out even sweeter.

"Genesis! Jethro Tull! Rush!" Rodriguez blurted out. "All the classics. And King Crimson! I'm a hardcore fan of King Crimson!"

Sword of Ages #1 (SEP170459) is in comic shops November 29.
