Staff Picks (December): Steven Universe Volume 1 TP

Cartoon Network has mastered the art of creating shows that appeal to young audiences while still having something to offer older viewers and Steven Universe is no exception.  Mixing elements of fantasy and science fiction, Jeremy Sorese, who has previously written for Adventure Time, captures a character we can all relate to no matter our age.  This is a coming-of-age story about a boy who meets Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl – the “Crystal Gems” – and discovers that he is half-gem himself.  Despite his special heritage and his cool friends, Steven Universe is just a normal kid trying to do the right thing, which allows us all to see ourselves in his shoes.  Sorese’s stories and Coleman Engle’s art capture the magical world of the hit show perfectly and this comic offers all-new adventures for fans and newcomers alike.

Collecting issues #1-4, Steven Universe Volume One is a great read for new comic readers and a must-have for fans of the television show.
