Staff Picks (March): Tank Girl — Two Girls One Tank #1

Tank Girl feels like going on an anarchistic bender with that one delightfully inappropriate girl from high school that sort of scared me and sort of made me think I was in love.  If Mad Max, Alice in Wonderland, and Hunter S. Thompson experienced a transporter malfunction on the starship Enterprise and came out as one singular individual, she would probably look a little bit like the “Putrid Princess of the Outback.”  Slogans like “Only Anarchists are Pretty” and “Elvis is a Stiff” feel right up there with Alice’s snack emblazoned with the caustic note “Eat Me” or Raoul Duke’s “Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride.”

And what is the ride?  In Titan’s newest Tank Girl story arc, “Two Girls One Tank,” the mythic vehicle has been nicked by a rival tank wannabe and the race is on to reclaim property and pride of place.  The story is fun, but it’s the little profane touches and the incendiary background graffiti that make the bandolier-wearing, motor oil-guzzling characters really feel at home in this world.

It’s a wasteland, but it’s not a cultural wasteland, and like that angry, brilliant, anarchist girl in high school, behind the attitude is a thought-provoking individual with way more to say than all the boys on campus.
