Us or Them: Turkeys vs. The Comics

Norman Rockwell’s iconic Thanksgiving Dinner painting has for years stood as a lasting image of the all that makes Thanksgiving special: Home, Family, and the big meal served to honor the sacrifices and struggles of our nation’s earliest “Pilgrim” settlers.

So iconic is Rockwell’s painting, that comic books have over the years honored it with similarly posed images.

But there’s a darker side to the Thanksgiving and Comic Books connection… and that dark side is inhabited by one large, flightless, slightly ugly-but-delicious bird: The Turkey.

Those rat-bastard birds!

You can trace the “Turkeys vs. Comics” conflict all the way back to the days of the Pilgrims, when they were introduced to the vicious beasts by the Native Americans who helped them to survive not only the harsh winter, but the threat of Turkey attacks!

As the years wore on, the Turkeys stepped up their campaign of terror against the Comics, targeting all manner of funny animals, for they were among the first Comics to face the dreaded birds…and a Rabbit and Duck would lead them!

Soon the Comics turned the tide of the long war with the Turkeys, and although there were a few sympathizers…

…Thanksgiving Dinner was served, Comics-style!
