Historic End For The Dark Knight

Article Image 1b27At this past summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, DC Entertainment announced artists Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson would be joining Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello in bringing to life the final installment of The Dark Knight Returns saga.

The headline was that Dark Knight III: The Master Race (SEP150179) would be the epic conclusion to Miller’s 1986 classic The Dark Knight Returns, championed by TIME magazine as one of the 10 greatest graphic novels of all time, and predecessor to the follow-up 2001-2002 series Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again.

Fast forward to present day, specifically August 26 when the September issue of the PREVIEWS catalog appears in comic shops. You’ll see the front cover of the catalog unveils the vision DC prepared us for in San Diego: a new monthly eight-issue series in which each 32-page periodical contains a special 16-page “Dark Knight Universe” comic showcasing a rotating cast of special guest artists and characters.

Co-Publishers for DC Entertainment Dan DiDio and Jim Lee have said that (in the words of DiDio) they’re “pulling out all the stops to deliver an amazing conclusion.” Andy Kubert has commented that Miller and Azzarello’s story will be nothing short of a “great ride,” and a landmark for the next generation of writers and artists.

"Any opportunity to work with Frank Miller is a happy occasion for me,” said Klaus Janson. “Add the talents of Brian Azzarello and Andy Kubert to the mix and we have the ingredients to achieve something truly memorable.”

Article Image 2260Each issue of Dark Knight III: The Master Race will include:
• A 32-page standard format comic book that will measure 6.625” x 10.1875”
• A 16-page minicomic with no interior ads that will measure 5.5” x 8.375”

The minicomic will be tipped on to an insert and bound into the main comic.

After the release of the single issues, DC plans to release a volume of the Dark Knight III: The Master Race Collector’s Edition which will collect the both the main story and minicomics as a single 7.0625” x 10.875” title, with both stories presented at the same trim size.

Plans are in place for an array of variant covers for the single issues, as well as a future slipcase edition.
