Melody Malone Stalks the Mean Streets of Manhattan in This Month's PREVIEWS

The singularly gorgeous Alex Kingston as River Song/Melody Malone

Doctor Who fans were moved to tears in September when Amy Pond and Rory Williams left the Doctor in the midseason finale, "The Angels Take Manhattan." This episode also guest-starred their daughter (and the Doctor's wife) River Song, portrayed by Alex Kingston, and audiences met a new identity for the enigmatic River Song — the 1930s private detective Melody Malone, both on the mean streets of Manhattan and in the pages of a trashy pulp novel from the era, The Angel's Kiss.

Article Image b765This month PREVIEWS offers several new Melody Malone-themed products that utilize the pulp-styled artwork created by the BBC for the episode, available now on the Doctor Who Series 7 Part 1 Blu-Ray (AUG128059) and DVD (AUG128060) sets.

First up is BBC AudioGO's Doctor Who: The Angel's Kiss – A Melody Malone Mystery audio book (JAN131412, $24.95). Acclaimed Doctor Who novelist Justin Richards penned a pulp detective novella starring Melody Malone, and Alex Kingston reads the audio book:

When movie star Rock Railton appears unexpectedly at Melody Malone's Angel Detective Agency and mentions "the kiss of the angel," Melody takes the case. Angels are, after all, Melody's business. At a press party for Railton's latest movie, Melody is invited by studio owner Max Kleiner to the film set of their next blockbuster. He's spotted her potential and wants her to become a star. Flattered, Melody will discover the cost of fame is greater than anyone could possibly imagine.

Will she be able to escape Kleiner's dastardly plan – before the Angels Take Manhattan?

While Melody Malone's adventures in New York may be over — for now... — the Doctor Who adventure goes on!

Doctor Who gears up for its fiftieth-anniversary in 2013 and returns on Christmas Day on BBC America with the new Christmas special "The Snowmen," guest-starring Richard E. Grant and Sir Ian McKellen, and introducing Jenna-Louise Coleman (last seen on Doctor Who as the ill-fated Oswin Oswald in "Asylum of the Daleks") as the Doctor's newest traveling companion, Clara.

And beyond Melody Malone, there is a wide variety of Doctor Who products in the January PREVIEWS!

IDW Publishing's ongoing comic book continues in Doctor Who #7 (JAN130422, $3.99), and their 50th-Anniversary mini-series focuses on the third Doctor (portrayed by Jon Pertwee) in Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time #3 (JAN130419, $3.99). But other Doctors are not forgotten as the seventh Doctor, portrayed by Sylvester McCoy (Radagast the Brown in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) returns in vintage reprints from Doctor Who Magazine in Doctor Who Classics #1 (JAN130418, $3.99).

Character Options offers three new building block sets in their popular Doctor Who Character Building line. For the TARDIS Dematerialization Set (JAN131786, $34.99), the TARDIS is built from transparent bricks. The "Girl Who Waited" Set (JAN131787, $34.99), based on the Hugo Award-nominated episode, the waiting room, lush landscape, and handbots are all buildable. Finally, for the "Doctor In Berlin" Set (JAN131788, $34.99), Amy and Rory are on the run from the Germans in a buildable recreation of a scene from the sixth season episode "Let's Kill Hitler."

These and many other Doctor Who products are available in January's PREVIEWS.

With Doctor Who back at Christmas and the second half of the season airing this spring in advance of the series' 50th-anniversary, fans can be sure that they have not seen the last of the mysterious River Song — or her hard-boiled Melody Malone persona.
