When we last saw cut-rate private detective Ira Avery, his investigation into the disappearance of photojournalist Savannah Loy led him into the violent underbelly of San Hannibal, Calif., where he narrowly avoided death-by-bombing—with the fate of his tentative guide and best lead, Diane Thrax—uncertain.
