TMNT Universe Expands With New Ongoing Title

by Vince Brusio

We were fortunate to speak with IDW Publishing’s Editor Bobby Curnow this month to talk about a new title that’s a Gem of the Month in the June edition of the PREVIEWS catalog. At the beginning of the IDW section you’ll see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #1 (JUN160422) listed, featuring work from writer Paul Allor, artist  Damian Couceiro, and various other talented creators. Here in this PREVIEWSworld Exclusive interview, we get into the guts of what’s lined up for this new TMNT ongoing title!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #1 (JUN160422) is in comic shops August 31.

Article Image 4c19PREVIEWSworld: What is the premise for this new series?

Bobby Curnow: This series is essentially a sister-series to the TMNT ongoing. There are so many stories to tell that we had to add a second book to accommodate them all! Expect the same blend of action and characterization that you can find in TMNT, with a greater focus on personality and the artist creator’s individual vision.

PREVIEWSworld: Will the Turtles get any kind of makeover for this new launch? Any new add-ons or DVD extras type stuff?

Bobby Curnow: Each issue will have a special bonus story to supplement the main story. As for the Turtles themselves, we will see a rotating creative team, so expect to see many different artistic takes on the Turtles.

PREVIEWSworld: In “exploring the pivotal characters” of the TMNT universe, what does that entail? Who will be first to get put under the microscope?

Bobby Curnow: The first storyline will see a focus on Raphael, but also many supporting characters like April, Baxter Stockman, and some brand new villains.

PREVIEWSworld: Will all issues feature backup stories? Does the series plan to work on multi-issue story arcs? Self-contained stories?

Bobby Curnow: Every issue will have a back-up story, and every story will be in continuity. Our aim is to make these stories enjoyable by themselves, but provide a deeper background and understanding to the overall TMNT world.

PREVIEWSworld: For this summer’s convention season, at what particular shows can fans find the creators should they want a book signed?

Bobby Curnow: Be sure to come visit IDW at San Diego Comic Con… we’ll have many TMNT creators including myself, Tom Waltz, Mateus Santolouco and Kevin Eastman!
