Vokes Returns for Dark Tales of Monsters and Mayhem

This year fans of classic horror will receive a very special treat. Neil Vokes — the incredible illustrator and creator of comics like Eagle, The Black Forest, and Flesh & Blood — is unleashed to tell new and classic tales of terror in a brand new anthology. If you love all things creepy and crawly, prepare for old school horror and modern storytelling to collide in a one-of-a-kind new series. In this American Mythology interview, Vokes himself answers questions about Dark Tales From The Vokesverse (JUN161095), which is in comic shops September 21.

Neil Vokes: The Vokesverse is a somewhat silly term for a bunch of short stories and characters that I’ve co-created with various writers through the years. Because the stories all share the same artist and co-creator (me), it could be said that they inhabit the same universe, I suppose. But I’d more likely consider them within a multiverse — sort of like Earth 1, 2, etc. That doesn’t preclude them from crossing over with each other. Since I enjoy working on projects that use a lot of similar ideas and influences, thematically they certainly do live near each other.

American Mythology: Why is this project important to you?

Neil Vokes: It’s important to me because I truly enjoy doing what I do in this crazy business and I’m very lucky to still be doing this over 30 years later. Believe me, I’ve amassed quite a few dark tales in that time.

American Mythology: Will we see these characters again in future issues or their own series?

Neil Vokes: Well, I certainly hope we will. They could easily move on to their own series, each have their own back stories and potential future stories existing in all the creators’ imaginations. Hopefully this anthology will introduce our diverse characters and stories to the readers in a way that will entertain and horrify.

American Mythology: We saw the first new Eagle and Death’s Dark Angel comics in over 20 years, and now the Falconer is back in Dark Tales from the Vokesverse. Are you enjoying working on these great characters again?

Neil Vokes: I am overjoyed to be working with Eagle, Death’s Dark Angel, and Falconer again. I never thought that I’d get another chance to tell these characters’ adventures. Thanks to the efforts of talented collaborators and the loyal friendship and advice of people like Jim Kuhoric, I get to continue playing in my favorite playground.

American Mythology: What do you want your fans to know about this new project?

Neil Vokes: I want to share my love for the horror/adventure genre within these short stories and the possible series to follow. I want my fans and friends to know that I’m going to put 100% of myself into bringing them the best, most entertaining stories my partners and I can come up with for as long as they want me to do them.
