Know Your Heroes: Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones is making her live action debut on Netflix November 20th. She'll be joining Daredevil on the streaming service and setting the stage for Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. But who is this mysterious super powered woman with a serious drinking problem and anger issues to match?

Jessica Jones first appeared in Brian Michael Bendis' series Alias, featuring art from David Mack and Michael Gaydos. Alias was a launch title for Marvel's new "R-rated" MAX imprint in 2001, and Jessica fit right in with her filthy mouth and hard living. As the former small-time superhero Jewel, Jessica had a life changing run in with the long time Daredevil villain Purple Man, Dr. Zebediah Killgrave (played by David Tennant in the series). With the power to command anyone to do as he says, Jessica became his next victim.

After being kidnapped and tortured for several months Killgrave dumped an amnesiac Jessica onto the streets. Once she was found and put through a long and hard recovery, Jessica swore to never be controlled in that way again. Not comfortable with donning her superhero persona again, she uses her brain and brawn to open Alias Investigations and clean up the streets of New York City her way.

Get to know Jessica in the first volume of her debut series, Jessica Jones: Alias TP Vol. 1 (MR) (JUN150831). Someone comes to Alias Investigations desperate to find a missing woman, but when Jessica starts to unravel the tangled stories behind the disappearance, she finds herself caught in a far reaching government conspiracy.

Can Jessica find the connection between the missing woman, Captain America, and the President of the United States; or will this case cost her life? This story is a great introduction to the noir feel of Jessica Jones, and her supporting cast including Luke Cage.

While the Purple Man doesn’t show his face until the last trade paperback of Alias (OCT150992), this first volume is full of essential Jessica Jones moments. Once you’ve finished the Netflix series, these trade paperbacks will give you more of your new favorite characters with stories that may not have made the jump into live action…yet.

Turning Over A New Leaf

By the end of the Alias series Jessica’s life had radically changed, hopefully for the better. In her next series Jessica Jones: The Pulse - The Complete Collection (JUN140746), she finds a job working for The Daily Bugle’s new superhero section while trying to balance her relationship with Luke Cage and come to terms with becoming a mother.

While not as dark and gritty as Alias, Pulse isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to storytelling. This superhero turned reporter still has a knack for getting in over her head, and Jessica’s first assignment is to uncover the identity of a super powered murderer.

Then as the effects of Nick Fury’s Secret War leaves Luke in a coma, Jessica decides to fight back! Plus, the moment everyone has waited for, the birth of little Danielle followed by the Avenger-filled wedding day of Luke and Jessica.

As Jessica and Luke settle down to raise their daughter, a political storm is brewing and the upcoming battles will pull them into the fray. In the landmark Marvel event Civil War (JAN072436), an explosion near an elementary school caused by superheroes killed several hundred innocent civilians and causes the US Government to introduce the Superhero Registration Act.

With Tony Stark supporting pro-registration, Captain America leads the anti-registration movement and becomes a fugitive from the government. As Luke Cage sides with Captain America and fights to protect his family, Jessica is pushed away from the battle and must find a way to support a husband on the run.

Civil War, while not a story about Jessica Jones, is an important event in the characters history and explores just how far someone will go to make sure the ones they love are safe.

Jessica finally gets her chance to join the World’s Mightiest Heroes in The New Avengers (MAY110755). Captain America has given Luke Cage the keys to the Avengers Mansion, and the responsibility of finding new heroes for his team. Which heroes will Luke get to join him, and honestly who would want to?

At least his loving wife Jessica is by his side as the formidable Power Woman (while Squirrel Girl babysits). As they try to balance work and family, can they give their daughter a normal childhood in the Avengers Mansion?

When mystical evil forces take out Steven Strange, Dr. Voodoo, and Daimon Hellstrom; Luke and Jessica must act quickly and, along with teammates Victoria Hand, Iron Fist, Mockingbird, Carol Danvers, Spider-Man, The Thing, and Wolverine, assemble to take down the forces of evil.
