In keeping with this month's focus on Sci-Fi and Fantasy, we put together a quick overview of Star Trek literature that is absolutely necessary should you want to successfully jump to warp factor 10.
Writer Mike Johnson, Ryan Parrott, and artist Derek Charm are making history for IDW Publishing with their new five-issue mini-series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #1 (OCT150360). If you're a fan of the newly revamped franchise that starred Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Simon Pegg as Scotty, then you'll thrill to this new comic book that capitalizes on these new stars filling the big shoes of the legendary cast members.
The comic introduces a bold new chapter in the history of Star Trek, with a focus on cadets that are making their way through school and consequential growing pains. It's not easy to be a part of Starfleet, and these young guns are about to find out that getting through the school of hard knocks is a full-time gig that doesn't allow for you to run back crying to Mommy. You either have "it," or you don't. And if you don't, then don't let the door hit you on the way out, as there are plenty of other people standing in line who don't mind cuts and bruises.
The cover of the book alludes to how this new chapter in Gene Roddenberry's saga is something to be taken seriously, as the likenesses of Kirk, Spock, and Uhura shadow the new blood that has stepped up to the plate to be Starfleet's latest sentinels of freedom.

These new characters in the comic are the first new faces to be featured in the expanding Star Trek movie universe. They make their mark for the first time right here in this comic! So if you're looking for a collectible that will most likely be referenced in years to come when it comes to playing connect-the-dots, this is it.
