Spooky fun, alternative dress, and paths to discovery that go unnervingly sideways make up the obstacle course you'll navigate when you get into the new Blackcross (JAN151250) mini-series from Warren Ellis. Read the PREVIEWSworld Exclusive interview and get issue #1 on March 4th at your local comic shop!

**********

PREVIEWSworld:  Blackcross is described as a supernatural thriller that takes readers away from the polished shine of Golden Age stories. For those readers who may not be up to speed on your new angle, can you tell us how you went about formulating your idea for the series?

Warren Ellis: I don't know that Golden Age superhero comics ever had a polished shine: quite the opposite in fact.  They were kind of raw and odd, and often, in their way, a little creepy.  That's where I'm coming from here.  I've been interested in the comics of that era since the 1990s.  They have a peculiar, ashen magic to them.  So reframing these characters in the context of a ghost story, and having them emerge from The Other Side as it were, makes perfect sense to me.

PREVIEWSworld:  Tell us more about Marietta Chesler and how her profession plays a role in the dark mystery of Blackcross?

Article Image ed54Warren Ellis: Marietta is a medium and channeler and all that.  Before the story started, she was very probably a fake one.  As the story begins.... not so much.  She may in fact be the main portal between the ordinary world of Blackcross and The Other Side.  Which she isn't ready for, and her boyfriend/parasite-with-legs certainly isn't up for.

PREVIEWSworld:  Why does Rob Benton need medication? Is he just helping himself to freebies because of his job at the pharmacy? What’s his deal?

Warren Ellis: His deal is that he is carrying a secret that nobody at all in Blackcross knows about.  And nobody can find out about it, either, or he'd be dead in a week.  He's under quite a lot of stress on a daily basis.  And he's about to have a very, very bad day.

PREVIEWSworld:  If you had to make a trip to the public library to find the right brain food that puts you in the zone to write a story like Blackcross, what sort of books would you be checking out at the counter?

Warren Ellis: Actually, you can just watch the first episode of Twin Peaks, and listen to lots of Novella, Felicia Atkinson, Natural Snow Buildings, and Motion Sickness of Time Travel.

PREVIEWSworld: What are you looking to do with Blackcross? What kind of deviant fun do you have planned for future issues?

Warren Ellis: All six of them? I'm just here to tell a ghost story about strange people. Bad dreams and fancy dress. Secrets and lies.
