Ads Made Angst But License Made Ladykiller

If you stay in the pool long enough, you’ll grow gills. If you play guitar through high school, you’ll be a rock star. And — mixed with a diet of comic books — if you flip through vintage magazine ads for fashion and new appliances, you leave yourself susceptible to creating a comic book that has a housewife stabbing people in the chest. PREVIEWSworld: How did you conceive of Lady Killer (NOV140021)? What was the inspiration? From this view, it looks like June Cleaver meets John Waters’ Serial Mom on steroids.

Joëlle Jones: It came from a love of vintage ads and too many violent movies and comic books. I did these fake ads awhile back to try to get it out of my system but it didn't work so I had to do a book.

PREVIEWSworld: Tell us about how you pitched this idea to Dark Horse. Did you say something to the effect of, “Hey Milk & Cheese fans will absolutely love this stuff!”

Joëlle Jones: I never thought of that angle but I wish I had! It was more of a "would you mind if I just draw whatever I want and maybe people will read it?" kind of thing.

PREVIEWSworld: Without spoiling anything, what can you tell us about the story in Lady Killer #1?

Joëlle Jones:  It's about a young housewife living in the early 60's raising a family and she is a paid assassin on the side, but they don't know it.

PREVIEWSworld: What scene stands out among all the rest in Ladykiller? Which one made you break out into a maniacal laugh?

Joëlle Jones:  When I had her dress up as an Avon lady and stab someone in the chest. I'm not sure I laughed maniacally, I don't think I have ever felt the need to laugh maniacally but maybe I gleefully chortled a little bit.
