October PREVIEWS Celebrates Sci-Fi Month

Article Image bac4Science fiction is a theme that runs throughout the October PREVIEWS catalog: tales that are twisted, turning left and right, keeping you kinetically catatonic, second-guessing you sense of sanity.

And why not?

Sci-Fi is supposed to strand you on the edge of the cerebellum. It’s in the fine print. So hold up your data recorder high above your head to get this audio now: in the October PREVIEWS, we have a mother ship full of Sci-fi stories that you can easily find by looking for the Sci-Fi graphic throughout the catalog.

Where you see this logo is where you want can expect normalcy to check out, and disbelief to buy beachfront property.

Article Image 16aeOne book that’ll make you stare into space to look for the screams in Aliens Vs. Predator: Fire and Stone #3 (OCT140111).

You’re one step closer to the final curtain falling in this book that’s written by Christopher Sebela, and drawn by Ariel Olivetti.

The back story for this series is that the mercenary crew of the Perses has left the horror of LV-223 behind them.

But this does not usher in a new age of tranquility. One passenger has revealed a terrible new threat, and the crew finds itself in a life-and-death struggle between predator and prey in this Prometheus crossover!

In issue #3, a Predator is exposed to a mysterious genetic accelerant, and the rest of the hunting party is now put in unforeseen peril.

But let’s say watching ugly aliens munch on crew members isn’t something you find exactly palatable.

Article Image eaa2If that’s the case, you might want to then check out FBP: Federal Bureau Of Physics #16 (OCT140392), written by Simon Oliver and illustrated by Nathan Fox and new series artist Alberto Ponticelli.

This series—which is part of DC Comics’ Vertigo line of titles — details a world where alterations in the laws of physics are an everyday reality, just as common as stepping onto your porch in the morning only to see that it’s raining frog legs.

And that’s really not much of a stretch, as in this issue Adam is faced with the secrets of his father's final work laid bare.

It may be too much to handle, and push him into signing up to save the world.

Oh, but you think you’ll skip past the modern day Don Quixote as you’d rather take a vacation in space. The final frontier.

Fair enough.

Article Image 040dWe’ll do you one better if you see how IDW Publishing has joined with BOOM! Studios to give us a five issue series that kicks off with Star Trek/Planet Of The Apes #1 (OCT140442) written by Scott and David Tipton, with art by Rachael Stott.

This book is a GEM of the month, and the crossover nobody ever expected.

The world of James Tiberius Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise sides with Dr. Zaius to protect Ape City?

Who would have seen this coming?

Which is the point!

It’s a story that will have everyone’s heads spinning, and portray a chilling look at the fall of humanity. Definitely worth a look, even at warp drive.

Sci-Fi, however, can get a bit dark at times, and not necessarily because Xenomorphs are chasing after you and your crew.

Article Image 9690In Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga Volume 4 TP (OCT140644), the #1 New York Times bestseller returns with a visit to new planets, new adversaries, and a new story direction, as Hazel becomes a toddler while her family struggles to stay on their feet.

And staying upright is very much a challenge as Hazel’s parents, Alana and Marko, are two lovers from different worlds whose people are at war with one another.

Love may conquer all, but it can also be an obstacle course of emotion when outsourced death and destruction are raging around you.

This second trade paperback from Image Coics collects issues #19-24 of the highly acclaimed series.

Speaking of chaos raging around you, such is the situation for Clive, Susan, and the others in Wild’s End #4 (OCT141131) from BOOM! Studios, written by Dan Abnett with art by I. N. J. Culbard.

Article Image b3fcAbnett is one of comics' most renowned sci-fi writers, and is best known for his incredible run on Guardians of the Galaxy which in part inspired the Marvel Comics blockbuster movie.

Abnett’s collaboration with I.N.J. Culbard is a natural, as Culbard has made his bones with the critically acclaimed adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness.

In the latest chapter of Wild’s End, the group is surrounded and still far away from their home town of Crowchurch, and they’re learning that they may be the only survivors of the aliens' destruction.

Safety is the only priority. But options are as rare as finding a 13th floor in any city hotel.

Speaking of that diabolical number, in Letter 44 #13 (OCT141577) from writer Charles Soule and artist Alberto Alburquerque, President Blades reveals the truth about Project Monolith to the world, hoping to end a global war before it starts. Letter 44 is an ongoing series from Oni Press that is a must-read for those of you not familiar with the title.

Article Image 77ffThe book asserts what many of us have been surmising since we first saw the mainstream production of a UFO poster that asked all of us to “believe.” Letter 44 puts forth that, yes, there IS something up there. But it’s not just little metal bobsleds skipping across the planets. What President Blade has learned from his predecessor is that NASA learned seven years ago that an alien construction project has been found in the asteroid belt.

And the astronauts in charge of the mission are ready to report their conclusion in this tale of real-world space travel, intrigue, and secret histories.

There's something up there. As newly elected President Stephen Blades reads the letter left for him in the Oval Office by his predecessor, he learns this stunning secret: seven years earlier, NASA discovered an alien construction project in the asteroid belt. A crew of heroic astronauts was sent to investigate, and they're nearing the conclusion of their epic journey. Don't miss the first chapter in this thrilling tale of real-world space travel, intrigue, and secret histories!

These books are just the tip of the iceburg for all the Sci-Fi stories you’ll find in the October issue of PREVIEWS. We suggest you put on your space helmet, grab some freeze-dried ice cream, and settle back in your capsule for a journey into intergalactic storytelling that may leave you wanting to stay stranded in a solar system far, far away.

Be sure to look for the Sci-Fi logo and titles in this month’s PREVIEWS catalog, and take your want list to a nearby comic shop retailer!
