Tom Taylor Talks About The New Superior Iron Man

by Vince Brusio

Tom Taylor was given the license to give Tony Stark a makeover. And with that charge, Taylor has produced Superior Iron Man (SEP140798), a new series that serves up the Avenger as someone you may not like at first, but that may not matter. Tony is his own audience. So we acted as Tom’s audience to hear more about what lies ahead for this new Marvel series that focuses on a very self-righteous Tony Stark.

**********

PREVIEWSworld: So is it possible that Tony Stark is the new breed of alpha male? Previous headlines we’ve seen on the web say that Tony will be seen as “arrogant,” and “superior.” But yet what’s to be liked if someone says you’re “superficial”? Does the adjective “cunning” somehow balance it all out? Is the plan to make Tony Stark likeable in Superior Iron Man, or to somehow let him stand on his own like James Spader’s Red Reddington in The Blacklist?

Article Image b31bTom Taylor: I wouldn’t call Tony in Superior Iron Man ‘likeable’. I don’t think many readers would want to be close, personal friends with our Stark. But there’s ‘likeable’ and then there’s ‘entertaining’. I’m hoping people find this Superior Tony Stark pretty entertaining. And, if you don’t, Tony will find himself entertaining enough for the both of you.
I’d argue someone doesn’t have to be likeable for a reader to enjoy the book. Would you invite Deadpool to have dinner with you and your Mom?

PREVIEWSworld: The initial setting is that Tony returns to San Francisco to be a good samaritan. Can you give us a little more information to work with here? Is he handing out free money? Free ice cream? What gets the show started in the initial issues of Superior Iron Man?

Tom Taylor: Tony is handing out free Extremis, downloadable through any smart device. It’s a new type of Extremis that’s more of a cosmetic wonder. The people of San Fran are going to be transformed into their ideal versions. Perfection at the tap of a screen. Tony is setting himself up as something of a messiah in the centre of all this. His life is about to become a non-stop party surrounded by perfect people who fawn over him, and he’s pretty happy about this.

Article Image 79abPREVIEWSworld: What was the work relationship between you and Yildiray Çinar while developing this series? Was it smooth sailing from the start, or did you two engage in a lot of emails/tweets on how to break new ground?

Tom Taylor: Along with our great editors, Mark Paniccia and Tom Brevoort, it’s all been pretty smooth sailing. Obviously, we’re part of a shared universe, so Yildiray and I need to make sure we don’t do anything that goes against AXIS or any other book. I can’t just give Hulk a mustache or, say, blow up Canada without some discussion. But most of our ideas have been met with a lot of enthusiasm from everyone. And Yildiray has just been killing it on the art side. There’s a variant cover coming from him that’s also just perfect.

PREVIEWSworld: Without spoiling the book, what sub-plots or scene(s) would you most likely want to blog about to tout as being most representative of the work overall?

Article Image 4da1Tom Taylor: I think the opening scene with She-Hulk, and a character we’ve never seen before, really sets the tone for our slightly changed Tony Stark. Will you like him after this scene? Probably not. Will you find him entertaining? We hope so.
But the real intrigue in the first arc comes from the conflict between Iron Man and Daredevil. On one side you have a powerful, arrogant and self-righteous Tony Stark and, on the other side, you have a Man without Fear. Neither of these guys are taking a step back.

PREVIEWSworld:  If people want to talk to you more about this project, are you able to point anyone to a social media site of your choice?

Tom Taylor: I’m always happy to chat on Twitter.
