Horror Hostesses Unite in Dawn/Vampirella #1

Article Image 3b39

This crossover story begins when the silver-tongued demon Masodik tricks and kidnaps both Dawn and Vampirella. Their demon host demands a cat fight to see who is best suited to his purposes, but the ladies suggest something more feminine -- a storytelling contest.

But the tale of how Dawn/Vampirella #1 (JUL141057) came to be is just as interesting as the comic itself!

Joseph Michael Linsner, creator of Dawn and writer and illustrator of this new series from Dynamite Entertainment, spoke with us about this exciting crossover.

: Dawn/Vampirella marks the first-ever crossover for Dawn. What inspired you to bring these two characters together?

Joseph Michael Linsner: Nick Barrucci! Nick owns Vampirella and bringing them together was all his idea. I’ve known Nick for 25 years and have worked with him on many projects, but never on a comic series.

I’ve had offers to do crossovers before, but I turned them down because I wanted to keep Dawn’s world closed and airtight. I’ve always loved Vampi and when this crossover came up, I instantly figured out a way to make it work.

For me, Dawn is coming full circle – Vampi helped inspired Dawn’s creation and now she’s going to share a stage with her. I’m pretty excited.

PREVIEWSworld: Both Dawn and Vampirella were “horror hostesses” – lovely figures who ushered in comic tales in the anthology series Cry For Dawn and Vampirella Magazine, respectively – and evolved into so much more. Would you consider the concept of Dawn/Vampirella, where the characters engage in a bit of myth-making themselves, as harkening back to their inception?

Joseph Michael Linsner: I wanted to do a story that embraced who these characters are and explore both their similarities and differences. They started out as horror hostesses, introducing short stories, so doing a riff on the tale of Scheherazade (where a captured maiden has to tell stories to save her skin) seemed like a great starting point.

I plan on weaving the stories they tell into the larger narrative in a way which will illuminate things from a different perspective. It should be a lush reading experience and very visually dynamic.
