Tom Brevoort Says No Homework Required To Enjoy Original Sin

It is a time of shifty eyes. Mistrust. Foul play. And deceit. Only certain people have the credentials and right badges to dare ask Executive Editor Tom Brevoort the question that’s on everyone’s minds: who killed Utau the Watcher in Original Sin? How long did Tom think he could evade us? Where did he think he could hide? I chased after this man for days…days I tell you, dear readers! My stamina prevailed, and this man at Marvel finally relented. I had earned my five minutes. The following questions were asked quickly, breathless, and in between gulps of Gatorade.

**********

PREVIEWSworld:  So Uatu the Watcher has been snuffed, and the investigation falls in the lap of Nick Fury. Why should he be the one to ask if the Butler did it? Why does Fury get tapped for the investigation?

Tom Brevoort: First off, man, show some respect here, all right? The Watcher is a long and storied Marvel figure, with centuries of service to his credit! Were you a part of the Galactus Trilogy? So, have some consideration for the deceased!

Article Image b2e3Nick Fury is tapped to lead the investigation because he's with Cap and Widow and Wolverine when news of the body on the moon comes in, because he's the closest the Avengers have to experienced murder police within their midst. Thor, for example, is great at smiting, but is perhaps not as accomplished at solving. This is more in Fury's wheelhouse than anybody else's.

PREVIEWSworld: Ok. Fun question time. A big chunk of the plot is that with the Watcher's murder comes a document dump that is unprecedented. The universe's secrets now have the ability to go viral, and get into the hands of the wrong people. If you had to hypothesize about what such secrets would be, and the damage they could do, what sort of diagram would you draw to show the possible domino effect on the Marvel Universe?

Tom Brevoort: Well, it's pretty simple. The Watcher has been observing all of the clandestine and noteworthy activity all throughout the Marvel Universe since time immemorial. So any bad or secretive or embarrassing thing that's ever happened, he's borne witness to it. And it's now too late for the inhabitants of the MU to erase their browser history, as all of that information has potentially been unleashed on the wide waiting world.

Article Image 8397PREVIEWSworld: On February 19, Marvel kicked off a "Next Big Thing" live conference call with you, Jason Aaron, and Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso. The three of you sat down to takes questions from the press. What were some of the most interesting questions posed to you about this series?

Tom Brevoort: I think that most of the questions that were posed were reasonable and relatively obvious, so I don't feel like we were asked anything from out of left field during that event. People simply tried to wrap their minds around the scope and scale of the storyline.

PREVIEWSworld: What is the genesis for this storyline? What were you doing or toying with in your mind when the idea first came to you for this series? Is your personal bookshelf library full of the old What If? titles, and you decided to throw your hat into the ring?

Tom Brevoort:  The initial seed of an idea that grew into Original Sin is something that's been kicking around Marvel for a number of years, through a variety of Retreats. Initially, it was a thought that Allan Heinberg threw out in the context of our discussion of the storyline that grew into becoming Fear Itself, the underlying notion of the greatest secrets in the Marvel Universe being uncovered and unleashed.

Following that, it was Ed Brubaker who came up with the idea that it would be the murder of the Watcher that would allow all of those secrets to be unleashed into the world — that he'd be the one person who'd have access to them all.

Article Image 625cBut it wasn't really until Jason Aaron stepped up and took ownership of the Event that it really became a story — and the story of Original Sin is entirely Jason's and Deo's.

PREVIEWSworld:  If people can't wait for the book to hit the shelves, and they want to hear more about it, is there a particular web site they should check out for details? Are you on a tour, or making stops anywhere?

Tom Brevoort: There really isn't any homework to do — although they could check out the Original Sin #0 later this month if they wanted to get the full 411 on the Watcher and his history, in a story by Mark Waid and Jim Cheung.

But Original Sin #1 starts at the beginning, so there really isn't any additional backstory that you'll need to possess moving into it.
