Attack On Titan Takes No Prisoners

Article Image 05ddAttack On Titan by Hajime Isayama is the monster hit that's revitalizing the manga industry throughout the world. Debuting in the United States in March of 2012, the series has accumulated legions of fans who clamor for every new issue. Here's a breakdown of everything you need to know to get started reading this colossal series.

For milennia, human beings ruled the natural world. With no predators to keep them in check, humanity filled every corner of the globe. But a century ago, everything changed when the Titans appeared. Giant, grotesque parodies of the human form, these sexless monsters proved nearly impossible to kill, and were driven by a single desire: to consume human beings.

In a few short years, almost the entire human race had been wiped out. The few thousand that remained took refuge behind three concentric walls, and as the years passed with no Titan attacks, people grew complacent in their walled cities.

One boy, Eren Yeager, yearns to explore the world beyond the wall. But what began as a childish dream will become an all too real nightmare when a Titan finally knocks a hole in the outermost wall, and the Titans once again threaten to wipe out humanity...

This series features a plethora of captivating characters split up into three main groups: Training Corps, Survey Corps, and of course the Titans! Here is a closer look at the characters you will encounter when you dive into the world of Attack On Titan.

TRAINING CORPS

Eren Yeager was raised in Shiganshina District along the outermost wall, where he dreamed of the outside world and longed to join the Survey Crops. After the Titan attack, Eren and his friends became refugees, finally deciding to join the military. Eren's rage against the Titans is the only thing that animates him, aside from his love for his friends.

Mikasa Ackerman is Eren's adopted sister. She is fiercely protective of Eren as a result of tragedy in her childhood. She joins the military alongside Eren, and quickly acquires a reputation as the most promising recruit in generations.

Armin Arlert is a friend of both Eren and Mikasa, who was also displaced by the Titan attack. Where Eren has determination and Mikasa has brute strength, Armin has a rare capacity for strategic thought, though his lack of confidence often gets in the way.

SURVEY CORPS

Commander Erwin, the leader of the Survey Corps, is a ruthless and brilliant commander who is willing to sacrifice anything to prevent the extinction of humanity. A political rogue, he will even ignore the chain of command if the stakes are high enough.

Captain Levi is known as "the strongest human alive." Levi has more Titan kills than any other Survey Corps soldier. Though a misanthrope and a compulsive neat freak, Levi is also committed to saving humanity, and unquestionably loyal to Erwin.

Squad Leader Hange,a mad genius obsessed with understanding the Titans' physiology, conducts experiments on captured Titans and recovered Titan parts. A loner, Hange will pursue knowledge without regard for personal safety.

THE TITANS

Titans are typically between 10 and 50 feet tall, and lack any intelligence except for an instinctual drive to eat humans. With a very high body temperature, they are nearly impossible to kill, with any wound simply healing in a burst of searing steam. Their only weak spot is the back of the neck. Certain Titans, known as "abnormals" exhibit greater intelligence, ignoring groups of humans in pursuit of tactical objectives.

The Colossus Titan measures over 150 feet tall, towering over other Titans and humanity's protective walls. It first appeared during the Titan assault on Shiganshina District, where it kicked in the district gate, then disappeared in a flash of steam.

After the Colossus Titan destroyed the Shiganshina outer gate, The Armored Titan, a 50-foot-tall human tank covered in rigid metal plates emerged to smash through the inner gate.

The Female Titan: This abnormal Titan, which resembles a woman, sprinted into the center of a Survey Corps expedition, seeking to abduct Eren. Fighting this unusual monster opened the door to answering all of humanity's questions about why the Titans exist.
