Diamond Announces Top Products for August 2013
Sep 06, 2013
(BALTIMORE, MD) — (September 6, 2013) — With the Avengers off-planet, Thanos plots his conquest of Earth and only the Inhumans can counter him in Jonathan Hickman and Jim Cheung's Infinity #1 from Marvel Comics, the best-selling comic book to specialty retailers in August 2013, according to information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors, the world's largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise.
Marvel Comics was the month's top publisher in both retailer dollar and unit share, taking 33.70% and 36.30% of the market respectively. DC Entertainment placed second in both categories, 30.16% and 33.14% respectively.
Though sales showed a decline in August, a four shipping week month, when compared to sales in July 2013 and August 2012, both five shipping week months, comics sales for the year are a robust 9.82% above 2012's sales.
Rick Grimes wakes from a coma and discovers a world in the grip of the zombie apocalypse in Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye from Image Comics, the best-selling graphic novel in August and the first volume of the best-selling series that inspired the AMC television series.
McFarlane Toys continues their line of action figures based on Robert Kirkman's best-selling comic The Walking Dead with The Walking Dead Series 2 Action Figures, a series of four figures, including The Governor's Daughter Zombie and Michonne's Pet Zombie, that was August' best-selling toy product to comic book specialty retailers.
More mutants join the HeroClix campaign with NECA/WizKids's Marvel HeroClix: Wolverine and the X-Men Booster Brick, August's best-selling games product to comic book specialty retailers.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located inNorth Americaand around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
The count of new titles shipped includes all titles that were invoiced by Diamond to retailers for the first time during the month and is not the official solicited title count for the month. Variant edition comic books and graphic novels at the same price point count as a single SKU. Variant edition comic books, digital combo packs, and graphic novels at different price points count as separate SKUs for each edition.
