Top 100 Graphic Novels: February 2013

Captain Nemo's daughter seeks to explore Antarctica, only to discover an ancient horror, in Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen book, Nemo: Heart of Ice, from Top Shelf Productions, the best-selling Graphic Novels in February.

DC Comics had four titles in the top ten, led by Batman: The Night of the Owls at #2. Also in the top ten were Batman: The Black Mirror at #6, Catwoman Volume 2: Dollhouse at #7, and Batgirl Volume 1: The Darkest Reflection at #9.

BOOM! Studios had two volumes in the top ten — Adventure Time Volume 2 ranked #3 and Adventure Time Volume 1 ranked #10.

Also with two titles in the top ten was Image Comics with Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye at #4 and Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga Volume 1 at #5.

Rounding out the top ten was IDW Publishing with Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation² Volume 2 at #8.

Among the premier publishers, Dark Horse Comics' top graphic novel for February was The Goon Volume 12: Them That Raised Us Lament at #19.

Finally, Marvel Comics' top-selling graphic novel in February was Iron Man: Tales of the Golden Avenger at #24.

Please note that comics marked with an asterisk have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, minus any copies that are distributed free of cost.

Please note that comics that were shipped to comic book retailers on December 28, 2012 with an on-sale date of January 2, 2013 were included in December's sales chart information.

About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
