Keep It Dark: How Ray Fawkes Is Driving The DC Universe

Here is a man who makes no beef that he never sleeps. In truth, it probably helps Ray Fawkes that he never sleeps, for sleep deprivation does things to the mind. It makes you say things you’d never say. It makes you think about things that sometimes has people raise their eyebrows, and then quietly leave the room. If you’re looking to leave the party with a dinner date, sleep is highly recommended. But if you’re the writer for several of DC’s comic books — particularly those that should be read on the dark side of the moon — lack of sleep is probably the best food for the imagination. It helps you ignore the warnings that tell you not to walk down the staircase that leads to the basement. Which is where we’d find John Constantine.

“Constantine is getting himself deeper and deeper into trouble. Is he trying to save the world? Or is he just trying to take it over?” Ray explains. “Constantine is the world’s worst superhero, or the world’s best villain.”

Yes, there are no easy answers when you ask Ray Fawkes to explain his characters’ motivations. Each door leads to…another door. Which usually makes for the best reading! Check out the YouTube video to hear Ray talk more about upcoming perils in the DC universe, including books like Batman: Eternal and Forever Evil: Blight!
