Undead Food Fight In Max Brook's The Extinction Parade

Max Brooks has been the center of attention this year because of the release of World War Z, starring Brad Pitt. The movie is based on Brook’s book World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. But this has not been the writer’s only contribution to the horror genre, as he's also penned The Zombie Survival Guide, and its follow-up The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks.

This year, Avatar Press showed Max Brooks had a new idea. One that would involve zombies, of course, as he and the undead are practically Facebook friends. But there had to be a new twist. Something different. And Max decided vampires were the answer.

“Basically, I’ve written so much about how humans would survive a zombie attack, I was wondering about another species. A species that we assume has all these strengths, but actually turn out to be weaknesses. Because I believe that when everything is given to you when you are born or created, essentially with all these innate strengths, you don’t learn how to fight. You don’t learn how to struggle.”

That was the angle he took with his new maxi-series, The Extinction Parade. Vampires, long a dominant predator, could be given a new coat of paint if they were seen as helpless against something other than sunlight. What would life be like for them if suddenly their source of food was depleted?
