Dude, Calm Down: It's Just A Regular Comic Book

Without a doubt, one of the hottest animated show's on Cartoon Network today is The Regular Show. And there's nothing regular about it. Which makes life fun for writer K.C. Green, who brings the show's comic book into stores this April! Taking a few minutes out of his busy schedule, K.C. shares a few thoughts on how this latest project came together for Kaboom!, and what that means for him when it comes to maintaining this ongoing series.

PREVIEWSworld: What kind of communication did Kaboom! have with you in regards to making the folks over at Cartoon Network happy with this project? As The Regular Show #1 (FEB130826) is based on a licensed property, there were obviously guidelines for you to follow. Did you have to answer a string of questions about the show to prove that you "got it"?

K.C. Green:  I didn't have to take any kind of test to be a part of this, they just asked and I have the common sense and intense enjoyment of the show to know what and what not to do. It's actually very cool of them to just jump on me like this and let me at it. I love the show a lot.

PREVIEWSworld: If you had to let us peek behind the curtain to see what Cliff Notes you used to start this series, what secrets would be revealed? What is
good source material for you to consider besides the TV show when coming up with adventures for Mordecai and Rigby? What fuels your muse? Or is it the other way around, and the book's purpose is to translate the TV shows' chaos to print?

K.C. Green: I think with the comic book there's a chance to take the chaos of the show just a bit further and longer with overarching stories and such. As for what fuels it, anything can be a seed of an idea, and you just got to keep pushing it when writing. It's fun to see how far you can go. There is no one source for ideas.

PREVIEWSworld: Cult cartoon shows are not new. We've seen our share of Ren & Stimpy, Beavis & Butthead, and South Park. But those shows were geared towards a mature audience, and The Regular Show seems to be having similar high-profile sucess while appealing to an all-ages audience. So what do you think is the secret of the show's success? What does The Regular Show offer today's culture, and how will you tap into that formula when working on the new comic?

K.C. Green: You just work. There's no button to push, no one ingredient to make the right potion. You just gotta sit and write and edit out things and add stuff that works within the given boundaries of the universe you are writing in, whatever boundaries those may be. Also, re-watching the show helps a lot.
